We're looking for a driven and experienced Technical Operations Manager to join a stable and well-established leader in the plastic packaging manufacturing industry. This role is critical to overseeing technical operations and process optimization at our facility, ensuring safety, quality, efficiency, and productivity while driving continuous improvement across extrusion, blow molding, and thermoforming processes. The Technical Operations Manager will play a pivotal role in leading technical teams, troubleshooting complex production issues, implementing process improvements, and supporting innovation in the production of high-quality plastic packaging solutions.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily technical operations for extrusion, blow molding (including extrusion blow molding), and thermoforming lines, ensuring optimal setup, operation, and performance to meet production targets and quality standards.
- Lead process engineering initiatives, including troubleshooting equipment and process issues, optimizing parameters (temperature, pressure, speed, cycle times), reducing scrap/waste, and improving throughput and yield.
- Manage and develop technical teams, including process technicians, engineers, supervisors, and operators; provide training, performance coaching, and leadership to foster a high-performance culture focused on safety and excellence.
- Drive continuous improvement programs using Lean, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies to enhance operational efficiency, reduce downtime, and implement cost-saving measures across manufacturing processes.
- Collaborate with production, maintenance, quality, and engineering teams to resolve technical challenges, support new product introductions, validate tooling/molds, and ensure seamless changeovers and startups.
- Monitor and analyze production data, KPIs (e.g., OEE, scrap rates, cycle times, material usage), and implement corrective actions to maintain compliance with quality, safety, and regulatory standards (e.g., ISO, FDA if applicable for packaging).
- Partner with maintenance to oversee preventive/predictive maintenance programs for extrusion lines, blow molding machines, thermoformers, auxiliaries, and related equipment to maximize uptime.
- Support material trials, resin selection, and process validation for new or improved products, ensuring compatibility with extrusion, blow molding, and thermoforming requirements.
- Ensure adherence to all safety protocols, environmental regulations, and company policies while promoting a zero-incident workplace.
- Contribute to budgeting, capital planning, and strategic initiatives related to technical operations and process capability enhancements.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field (Master's preferred).
- 10+ years of progressive experience in plastics manufacturing, with at least 5 years in a technical leadership or managerial role overseeing extrusion, blow molding, and/or thermoforming operations.
- Strong hands-on technical expertise in plastic processing techniques, including extrusion (sheet/profile/film), extrusion blow molding, injection blow molding (if applicable), and thermoforming (vacuum/pressure forming, heavy-gauge or thin-gauge).
- Proven track record of process optimization, waste reduction, and achieving measurable improvements in efficiency, quality, and cost in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
- Experience leading cross-functional teams and implementing Lean/Six Sigma tools (e.g., Kaizen, root cause analysis, SPC, DOE) in plastics production.
- Proficiency with process monitoring tools, data analysis software, and ERP/MES systems for production tracking and reporting.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization.
- Knowledge of safety standards (OSHA), quality systems (ISO 9001), and regulatory requirements for plastic packaging.
- Willingness to work in a fast-paced manufacturing setting with occasional off-shift support as needed.
